Potential Card Scam

Alert message sent 21/12/2020 13:54:00

Information sent on behalf of Northamptonshire Neighbourhood Watch

To All Northants Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators and Deputies

We have had an incident concerning a potential Bank Card Scam reported by a member.

The background is that a member received a new card from their provider, that they were not expecting, as there existing card still had several months before its expiry date

As the card was not contactless card,  the member contacted their provider, who advised they had not issued a new card. The scam reported was that if the card had been used it would have removed funds from the account.

We have spoken to the Fraud team at Northants Police , who advised that no incident of this type had been reported,  so its difficult to see if this scam would have worked.

We would offer the following basic advice
  • If you have any concerns about any of your cards , contact the provider immediately on the number that you normally use , you can find this on your statement.
  • Never provide passwords or pin numbers to anyone
  • If you get an unexpected call from you bank, call them back on the number you know, not one that someone else gives you, or offers to transfer you to.
  • Never respond to emails from your provider, asking for login /password/pin numbers or account details
  • Always report incidents like this to both your provider and the Police/Action Fraud Report fraud
Further advise is available from your provider, or Action Fraud

Stay Safe

Best Regards

Alan Earle
